Tour of Parque Internacional La Amistad (aka PILA: International Friendship Park) and Hot Spring

For fans of ecotourism and hiking, this is a must-see. It is the biggest park in the country and covers nearly 1 million acres between Costa Rica and Panama. It contains nearly every variety of flora and fauna in the country. Amongst the many species of animals, we can find jaguars, tapirs, pumas, and ocelots, 5 types of monkeys, sloths, coatis, and peccaries. There are over 450 species of birds such as quetzals, bare-throated, bellbirds, eagles, cotingas, falcons, and hummingbirds.

UNESCO declared the park a World Heritage Site in 1983.

Overview

The trip starts in San Vito, Coto Brus. We take route 612 towards Santa Maria de Pittier, 45 kilometers away. After one hour and 45 minutes, we arrive at the park ranger station in Pittier. We will register and choose one of the authorized trails (Rio canasta, the waterfall or Pittier Mountain)

The hike is approximately three hours long, and then we will enjoy a traditional lunch in the Cerro Pittier hostel.

We will return in the afternoon and make a stop at the hot springs, where we can bathe and relax in the warm water.
