The Las Tablas Protection Zone is a refuge for wildlife that belongs to PILA (Parque Internacional La Amistad- La Amistad International Park), with its abundant biodiversity in both flora and fauna. Its cloud forests have a great amount of oak and lauráceas (aguacatillos). Avocados happen to be the quetzal bird’s favorite food, which makes it one of the best places for quetzal-watching. It is also easy to spot the bellbird, which is why in August of 2021 Las Tablas was named The Biological Reserve of the Bicentennial of the Republic-Bellbird. The reserve is located in the Sabalito district of Coto Brus near the Panama border.
